How the Grinch Stole Christmas

 

If there's anyone who hates Christmas with a vengeance it's the reclusive green Grinch who lives on the mountaintop in Whoville. Unfortunately, the Whos, a munchkin-like people who live at the foot of his mountain, absolutely adore Christmas. After being disturbed by one too many jingles, the Grinch (played by Jim Carrey though you may not recognise him!) decides to sneak down to Whoville to put a stop to everything Christmas-related. However, he hasn't reckoned on a certain little Cindy Lou Who who decides to help the Grinch change his attitude. If you want a bit of cheeky holiday humour, then grab your popcorn and settle in. This film has a PG (parental guidance suggested) rating.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie

 

The classic tale of Rudolph, the reindeer who stands out from the crowd because of his red shiny nose, is brought to life in this animated family adventure. Poor Rudolph isn't like all the other reindeer with black noses and is made fun of by his uncles, his peers and the elves since he was born. When it all becomes too much for him he decides to run away from home and over his journey he makes some new friends. However, when Ice Witch Stormella threatens to put Santa out of business, Rudolph discovers he's more hero than zero and begins to believe being different isn't so bad after all. This movie has a G (general audience) rating.

Elf

 

This family-friendly movie is the story of Buddy (played by Will Ferrell), a human baby who's raised by elves at the North Pole. Buddy grows up believing he is an elf, with hilarious results when, as an adult, he tries to use tiny elf furniture and appliances. After realising he's not an elf after all, Buddy heads to New York to find his real father and has a lot of funny experiences along the way. Rated PG it's a great Christmas movie for families with older kids.

Home Alone

 

Don't try this at home kids, unless you're being burgled by a pair of numbskulls. This is the situation that 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) finds himself in when his family inadvertently leaves him home alone when they go off on their Christmas holiday to Paris. Kevin at first makes the most of his predicament by eating what he likes and doing whatever he pleases. But when two burglars try to rob his house, he uses his wits to stop them with a series of booby traps. This Christmas classic never gets old even though it was made in the 1990s, it has a PG rating.

Klaus

 

An animated Christmas comedy, Klaus is the story of the origins of Santa. The action takes place on the fictional island village of Smeerensburg situated above the Arctic Circle. Here the villagers are embroiled in a generations-old feud which leads to them regarding each other as enemies. When new postman Jesper is stationed there he finds an unlikely ally in a mysterious toymaker called Klaus who lives alone in a cabin. They become friends and help the villagers to move past old grudges, and to celebrate friendship and the spirit of giving. Rated PG.

The Polar Express

 

This is an animated Christmas adventure movie featuring a young boy's ride on a steam train to the frozen landscapes of the North Pole. Struggling with doubts over Santa Claus' existence, our hero is invited aboard by a cryptic conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks) to find out for himself, along with a bunch of other pajama-clad children. What ensues is a roller coaster ride of speeds and skids as the train hurtles towards its destination. The overriding themes of the movie are about the importance of friendship, being kind to others and continuous belief. The movie is rated G but young or sensitive kids might be scared by some of the spookier scenes.

The Santa Clause

 

A funny Christmas movie starring Tim Allen as divorcé Scott Calvin who has an encounter with Santa and is magically recruited to take his place. Hopping into the 8-reindeer sleigh, Scott and his son Charlie carry out Santa's duties delivering gifts around town, before being transported to the North Pole. There Scott is informed by a group of elves that he is now Santa thanks to the "Santa Clause" law. Scott refuses to believe it until his beard starts growing, he puts on weight and his hair turns white. Now he has to convince all the non-believers he knows that Santa is real. The movie is rated PG and is very entertaining thanks to Tim Allen's antics.

Arthur Christmas

 

This animated movie answers the question of how Santa delivers presents to all the children of the world in just one night. With the help of an ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole of course! But when the operation fails to send a present to one little girl on Christmas Eve, it's Santa's son Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy) and Grandsanta (voiced by Bill Nighy) who decide to go old school and deliver it by sleigh instead. The movie centres around the pair completing the mission before she wakes up, and to ultimately save Christmas. This movie is a great one for families to watch together and it's rated PG.
