Boxing Day falls on the 26th December each year; the day after Christmas. Whilst this is not a date which is celebrated globally, it is popular across many British Commonwealth countries including Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and Canada.
For most of these countries, Boxing Day is also associated with a public holiday. Because Christmas 2021 falls on a weekend this year, the two public holidays fall after the weekend.
· Christmas Day Public Holiday – Monday 27th December, and;
· Boxing Day Public Holiday – Tuesday 28th December.
As a holiday, it can be the perfect time to recover from those massive Christmas meals. Even better, there are usually enough Christmas leftovers that there is no need to cook.
Boxing Day Sales
In Australia, the Boxing Day Sales have typically been the major sales event in the retail calendar. Crowds would gather at the stores, hoping to be some of the first through the doors and grab the best deals. Whilst recent years have seen a growth in the popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday events, Boxing Day is still a great time to snap up some fantastic bargains.
In fact, the recent trend for the two sales periods is showing that online retailers are performing extremely well with Black Friday sales. The Boxing Day sales, however, are still the most popular shopping period for bricks-and-mortar stores.
The sales this year begin on Sunday 26th December, despite the official public holidays falling later in the week. For retailers, it is an excellent chance to clear the last of the current year’s stock and prepare for the new year. The perfect opportunity for both retailers and consumers!
Sporting Events
Boxing Day, in Australia, is also renowned for a couple of major sporting events.
· The first day of the Boxing Day test cricket match.
· The start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
Although cricket matches have been played over the Christmas period since 1865, the Boxing Day Test is a more modern tradition. Arranged for the first time in 1974, it was officially secured to be played annually in Melbourne at the MCG from 1980.
The Boxing Day test match is held between Australia and another national test cricket touring side. This year, however, it will be the third match of the Ashes Series between England and Australia. Big crowds are expected at the ground.
The Sydney to Hobart is one of the most famous yacht races in the world. Starting in Sydney Harbour and finishing at Battery Point in Hobart, the race draws many of the big maxi yachts from around the world as well as many others.
First run in 1945, it was originally meant as just a cruise with friends until a visiting British Navy captain suggested a race. The inaugural race had just nine starters with a finishing time of 6 days 14 hours 22 minutes.
Whilst the Sydney to Hobart is now run on a handicap system based upon the weight and dimension of the yacht, it is the “line honours” that draws the most prestige. The first to cross the line is almost invariably one of the maxi yacht fleet. Correspondingly, the finish times have dropped considerably since 1945 with the race record now set at 1 day 9 hours 15 minutes and 24 seconds.
Many people love to sit back and relax with the TV on, flipping between the cricket and the race. Even better, as these are both multi-day sports events there is still time to get to the sales and back without missing the final results.
