Introduction

When you first bring your washing machine home, it might not be perfectly level. You can remedy this by adjusting the feet on the bottom of the washer, but if you’re not sure how to do that, it may seem like an intimidating process. Luckily for you, today we’re going to walk through step-by-step instructions on how to level a washing machine by yourself!

Gather Tools/materials

Before you start, you'll need a few tools and materials.

  • A bubble level or phone level app (to check whether your project is level)
  • Adjustable pliers (to adjust the legs)
  • Two-by-four block (to support the washing machine during leveling process)

Preparation

Before you start, make sure the washer is unplugged and empty. You don't want to be working on a washing machine that has water inside of it! Also, if there are any leaks or drips from the machine, clean them up before continuing with your leveling process.

Next, remove any furniture that may be in the way so that you can move around freely. Check for any electrical problems such as tripped breakers or loose wires which could cause injury during the movement of heavy appliances like washing machines (and even dryers).

If possible move your washer away from the walls so there is adequate space for leveling rods.

Leveling the washing machine

  • Bring the washer out. Disconnect the washing machine completely before inspecting the flooring beneath it. The washer should be moved forward until the entire space beneath it is visible. Slide the entire tray and washer forward if the machine is mounted on a plastic tray.
  • Look for any sloppy foot pads and make any required adjustments. Under the foot of the washing machine, rubber anti-vibration pads that resemble furniture pads may have come loose. In order for the machine to stay level, all four pads must be in position.
  • Examine the flooring's condition. The flooring should be made of solid materials, such as wood, tile, vinyl, or laminate. Carpeting shouldn't sit atop a washing machine. Verify that the flooring is level with a level. A strong, well-maintained floor is a requirement. There shouldn't be any mold, water damage, decay, or cracks in the floor.
  • If necessary, fix the flooring. It is recommended to remove the floor covering first, then remove and repair the rotten subfloor, and then reapply the floor covering. The floor joists may be damaged in some situations.
  • Check your washer's level. Check the washer's level from front to rear and side to side after it has been reinstalled. Choose straight parts, such as those along the side seams or the top of the control panel, if the washer's top is rounded.
  • Before putting it back together, secure any new shims or leveling feet. Check to see if all four legs are in contact with the floor by rocking the washer side to side and back and forth with the lid down.
As the back feet are fixed in place, if they are uneven, the issue is with the floor. The steps that follow should be adjusted if the front feet are not level.
  • Prop up the washer's front. To lift the front of the washer a few inches, have a helper tip it backward. Place the two-by-four block in the washer's center, underneath the front.
  • Adjust the washer feet. Turn the front leveling feet either clockwise to elevate the washer feet or counterclockwise to lower them using pliers or by hand. To adjust to the floor, the feet might need to be at various levels. Ensure that each foot is still firmly fastened to the washer's base.

Testing the washing machine

If you've never had a washing machine before, then no doubt it's been a while since you've had to test one out. But if this is not your first time around the block, then these steps should be familiar to you.

First, you need to run a cycle and check for leaks, vibrations, and noise, then, there are a few more things to do:

  • Make sure there is no water remaining in the tub after each cycle. If there is any water left behind when the cycle ends, this may indicate that something needs fixing inside of your machine or perhaps even an obstruction within its drainage hose that needs clearing out before using again!
  • Make sure nothing is blocking access holes on top of the washer where hoses connect with the motor/pump assembly mounted underneath the cabinet baseboard area next to the drain pan opening where water flows out during spin cycles so nothing gets trapped behind walls - especially important if mounting higher than eye level location where visibility might be limited due to cabinets blocking view line into the bottom area once installed.
